highway patrol blues (road trip day three)

On Wednesday we were driving through Oklahoma when we passed a state patrol car parked in the median. This guy was obviously sterilizing passing motorists with his radar gun in an attempt to catch one of them, heaven forbid, trying to speed through his crappy state as quickly as possible. Anyway, I was not worried; I was only going a few mph over the speed limit. No way he would come after me.

Well anyway, after the Okie state patrolman chased me down and pulled me over, he came up to the passenger window as Lady Anne and I were fumbling with our paperwork. He said that they were practicing "strict enforcement" of the speed limits today, and he pulled me over for going 74 miles per hour.

The speed limit was 70.

You have got to be kidding me. Did this guy have nothing better to do? My foot slipping could have caused me to speed that much. Lady Anne suggested later that he probably pulled us over because he was just bored. But is that really an excuse for harrassing motorists? And what exactly does "we're practicing 'strict enforcement' today" mean anyway? Was I just lucky to be in Oklahoma during "strict enforcement" day? Do I win a T-shirt? Is every other day "lax enforcement" day?

Believe it or not, this was not the most ridiculous state patrol situation I have experienced. Once, while driving through Utah, I was pulled over for doing absolutely nothing. When the Ute state cop pulled me over, he said to me (and I SWEAR I'm not making this up), "I clocked you driving under the speed limit, but I could tell that you were going faster before that."

Truly amazing. Thousands of miles of interstate and I'm lucky enough to run into Supercop. I didn't get a ticket for this one; I guess the "I think you were speeding" law hadn't made its way through the Utah state legislature at the time.

Back to the original story, the Okie ended up not giving me a ticket, but what a waste of time and energy. One last note: if you're planning a cross country drive, try your best to avoid the state of Utah. The place is a speed trap.

hi buding! happy birthday!

i was complaining because usually people don't get pulled over for only going a couple mph over the speed limit. there is usually a small safety zone. if there weren't, 95% of people would get pulled over every day! but you are right, technically it is illegal to speed, no matter how small the infraction.

by the way, sorry you had to sign up to blogger to post comments. i am trying to set up a blog directly on the website where anyone can post comments, but it is taking me some time to set it up. it's coming soon!
