Today we did an abandon ship drill. For an abandon ship drill, we practice getting to our proper abandon ship station and executing a proper muster (muster = roll call). All the life rafts are on the flight deck, so we all had to gather up there for our muster. It went pretty smoothly, but I have a feeling that if we truly had to abandon ship it would be chaos, Titanic-style. Navy ships are designed to take some serious damage and keep floating, so if our ship took on enough damage to the point where we would have to abandon it, we would probably be in some serious doodoo.
The good news is the rest of the day is holiday routine. They are going to have a “steel beach picnic”, where they put barbecue grills up on the flight deck, and everyone can go out, lounge and enjoy the sun. These days are nice, because the next day it is always back to the daily grind (see last entry).
