Deployment, Day 17 continued - Operational security

One thing I have not mentioned in previous blog entries is the concept of operational security. There are certain topics that I cannot discuss on the blog right away because it discloses sensitive information about our present or future location or capabilities. If I talk about stuff like that, some non-friendly person who may be monitoring communication off the ship or even this blog may gather information that can be used against us.

For example, if I said that we have a port call in Hong Kong in exactly five days, someone could use this information to plan a terrorist attack or even to approximate our location in the ocean. The expression some people use is “loose lips sink ships”.

I wanted to write about this because a lot of what I write about will almost always be stuff that has already happened. For example, I did not talk about pulling into Hawaii until I was already there. By that time our location was no longer any big secret. I will also not talk about anything else in the future until it is already common knowledge or has happened.

Most people take e-mail and phone calls for granted. It’s pretty funny when you think about simple stuff military folks have to hold back when doing something as simple as writing a letter or making a phone call.
