Today I got my last shipboard haircut. Believe it or not, on a ship this size, we have two barber shops on board: one for the officers and chiefs, and one for the enlisted folks. We need to have full-time barber shops; they are both busy every day. You figure that everyone on board needs a haircut every 1-2 weeks to keep their hair within regulations. That’s a lot of haircuts! With less than five days until we pull into port, I won’t need another one before we pull in. I also did my last load of laundry in port Hawaii. The clean laundry I have left will easily last me until we are back in San Diego.
There are a lot of friends and family of crew members on board for the trip from Hawaii to San Diego. Navy ships out here on the West Coast do this a lot on the way back from deployment. It is called a Tiger Cruise. Basically the friends and family (tigers) meet us in Hawaii and ride the ship back. While they are on board, we plan activities for them like ship tours, air shows, movies on the hangar bay, and other entertainment. I guess it is a good deal for the service members and their tigers, but I don’t see how they will not be bored out of their minds halfway through the transit. There are activities, but there is a lot of dead time, too.
Anyway, not much else in terms of news out here. Just standing my bridge watches and wrapping up the last of my office work before that glorious day we pull into San Diego. I did get assigned some training (again), this time for the ship’s CDOs to re-orient themselves with San Diego base procedures, but this one should not be too bad.
