Chicago sports

Sitting on my sofa watching the Bears getting their butts beaten on Monday Night Football, I find myself contemplating the frustration of being a Chicago sports fan. It's been pretty slim pickings since the Bulls' run ended in 1998, unless you count the White Sox (and I don't).

This soon-to-be-rout comes on the same day that the Cubs announced the hiring of their new manager, Lou Piniella. Although I recognize the name and I remember his impressive run with the Mariners, I had to look him up to see his credentials.

Piniella has seen a lot of success as both a player and a manager, and it seems to me that he may bring the one thing that the Cubs seemed to lack last year: emotion. The Cubs were like the walking dead at the end of last season.

Of course, unless the Cubs can also get better players, all the extra emotion in the world won't help them. Want to impress me Jim Hendry? Don't let Aramis escape into free agency, and get a pitcher or two to shore up that disaster you call the starting rotation.

The Bears are down now, 23-10, with only the 4th quarter left and the Cardinals driving. Still a chance, but I know better than to show misplaced optimism when it comes to Chicago sports.
