Deployment, Day 143 – Rough seas

Over the last week or so we have been transiting through some pretty rough seas. There have not been any huge storms, but the weather in this part of the world at this time is usually heavy. It has made the ship pitch and roll a lot, and a lot of people were getting sick. I even felt a little queasy for a day or so, and I don’t ever get seasick. Fortunately the seas have died down a little, and we have been sailing pretty smooth just recently.

A piece of bad news: I did not pass my CDO board last week. One of the board members told me that I was really close, but my knowledge in one certain area was just a little lacking. I will not re-board before going home, so the next time I will get a shot at this board won’t be until late September at the earliest. That’s fine by me; this qualification was just a nice-to-have, and I really need to concentrate on getting safety work done before heading home.

Since the end of May I have been on the midwatch. It has been nice being on a quiet watch, but not getting a full night’s sleep was starting to get a little old. As of today, I am back on rotating watch sections, so not I will not stand watch only in the middle of the night but will rotate times throughout the day. I will miss the quiet midwatch, but I am glad to see a little daylight once in a while during watch.

Less the six weeks left of deployment. I can’t wait for that transit home!
