Deployment, Day 134 – In port Jebel Ali

A few days ago we arrived at our second Jebel Ali port call for this deployment. As you might remember, the real draw of this port is that the city of Dubai is only a half hour drive away. Yesterday I got a chance to go to Ski Dubai, which is a huge indoor ski resort. The ski slope is not that big; you can get to the bottom in about 20-30 seconds from the top if you go straight down. However, it was fun to be able to get a couple of hours of skiing in, and who would have thought I would be going skiing in the middle of the summer in the desert? It’s something that I had to do just once. Also during this port visit I saw The Da Vinci Code at the movies and had Lebanese food for the first time. I had hummus with pita bread and a chicken and beef shawarma, or pita sandwich. I also had a lemon juice with mint, which turned out to be lemonade with mint leaves ground into it. It was an odd flavor, but not bad.

Today is the last day of our port call, but I decided to spend it on the ship studying ofr my CDO board, which is scheduled for tomorrow. Pass or fail, this is the last board I will have before returning for deployment. I hope I pass, if only to get it out of the way and to be able to concentrate on my job the rest of deployment.
