Last night was an interesting duty day. Whenever we pull into a port, there are always a lot of interesting logistic challenges that are either overlooked or not anticipated. It is up to the guys on duty, like me yesterday, to figure out how to fix everything. Yesterday we had problems with the liberty buses that were taking Sailors and Marines on liberty over to the main base complex. The barge that also provides us with our fresh water also had some problems. This is all in addition to taking care of liberty incidents: drunk Sailors and Marines causing problems out on the base. Fortunately they kept their mischief primarily on base; liberty incidents in a foreign port, especially one out here in the Gulf, are really bad news. Last thing we need is to cause an incident that shows up on CNN. I was up pretty late last night helping to make sure any incidents were handled and was up early this morning to turn over the duty to the next crew.
I just got up from a mid-morning nap to recover. I’ve done my bit for this port; time to go out and enjoy some more liberty.
